Simple Homemade Naan Bread recipe
Here’s a simple recipe for homemade naan bread that you can make on the stovetop or in the oven:
Ingredients:
- 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ cup warm water
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
- 2–3 tbsp melted butter or ghee (for brushing)
- Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro for garnish
Instructions:
- Activate Yeast
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Make the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yogurt, olive oil, and the activated yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Let It Rise
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the Naan
- Divide the dough into 6–8 equal portions and roll each piece into a ball.
- Use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into an oval or round shape (about ¼ inch thick).
- Cook the Naan
- Stovetop Method: Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Place a rolled-out dough piece on the hot skillet. Cook for 1–2 minutes, or until bubbles form and the bottom is golden. Flip and cook the other side for another minute.
- Oven Method (Optional): Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C) and place a baking stone or sheet inside. Cook the naan for 2–3 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for 1–2 minutes more.
- Finish & Serve
- Brush the warm naan with melted butter or ghee. Garnish with minced garlic or chopped cilantro, if desired. Serve warm with your favorite curries or dips.
Enjoy your homemade naan!
